Tree Damage, Flooding and Power Outages in West Augustine After Tropical Storm Ian

Hurricane Ian made its way to St. Johns County as a tropical storm before once again becoming a hurricane on its way to South Carolina. 

West Augustine escaped the storm with downed trees, minor flooding and power outages while Lincolnville and much of the downtown St. Augustine area suffered more extensive flooding.

Clean up is under way and both the county, private companies and local residents are busy cleaning up debris after the storm.

A tree fell down across Mclaughlin Street at the corner of Pearl Street close to School #6, leaving residents without power. A clean up crew worked hard all morning clearing the street from debris. 

While the area is now passable, the neighborhood is still without power as crew is rebuilding the grid.

Several homes in West Augustine escaped downed trees that fell close by. 

A tree fell on a property on Mclaughlin Street north of Pearl Street.

A tree fell on St. Johns Street on the corner of King Street close by a new home that is still under construction. 

A tree fell right next to and on top of a fence on King Street behind the former bbq place. 

A tree fell on a property on South Whitney Street missing both neighboring homes. 

Woodlawn as well as The Pinehurst and San Sebastian cemeteries seemed to have made it through the storm with minor damage, while there were bigger branches and trees down in and around Evergreen Cemetery.

A few fences did not make it through the storm on the west side.

The ground is saturated, and the wetlands and ditches are overflowing, but West Augustine only received about 1/3 of the rainfall, which was initially forecasted. 

Many residents brought home sandbags from the Solomon Calhoun Center to protect their homes and properties from water damage

With the ground saturated and many trees standing in water, trees can still uproot and topple over.
