The St. Johns County Health Department has issued a Rabies Alert for our area.
More specifically the rabies alert is issued for an area of West Augustine.
The alert is centered around Helen and Spring Street and extends out to the concerning area below.
To the west: Francis Street
To the north: Theodore Street
To the east: Florida Avenue
To the south: Pearl Street
The alert has been issued after a laboratory- confirmed case of rabies associated with a racoon.
Rabies is a a nervous system disease, which can be deadly for both humans and warm-blooded animals, if not treated early. The St. Johns County Health Department advises that domestic animals should be vaccinated against rabies, and that humans should refrain from direct contact with wild life.
If bitten or scratched by a wild or domesticated animal seek immediate medical attention and call the St. Johns County Animal Control at 904 - 209 - 0746.
