Another Accident On N Clay Street in West Augustine - Locals Call For Speed Bumps

Remnants of Car Accident N Clay Street West Augustine

Last night there was a car accident on N Clay Street in West Augustine.

The accident happened Friday evening at the southern end of N Clay Street, when a car went off the road right after turning from the King Street Extension onto N Clay Street.

The new West Augustine Nature Society Adopt-A-Road sign, which the county put up this past spring, had been knocked down, and perhaps this sign prevented the car from fully going into the ditch.

The car was quickly removed, and only vehicle remnants and track marks were left.

This is not the first time an accident has happened in this particular location, and it emphasizes the speeding problem, which the neighbors are concerned about on N Clay Street and in the surrounding area.

"It's a shame that this happened," Emmett Rodney,  a seventh grader at Murray Middle and Vice President of the West Augustine Nature Society, said. "We lost two cats on this road already, and this could have been a kid. Luckily it wasn't."

In the past efforts have been made by local community members to get speed bumps up with no result. This summer, the effort has been revived, and this accident in addition to others have highlighted the importance of the cause.

Kierra Smith, a local activist, Parent Advisor and Community Safety Liaison with the West Augustine Nature Society has been working with community leaders and the neighbors in this part of the West Augustine community to get speed bumps installed on several roads in the area including on N. Clay Street and The King Street Extension, because of the constant speeding on these roads.

"I'm frustrated. What is it going to take for the county to do something?" Smith asked. "Does it take a person getting hurt before something is done? This is not the first time something like this has happened, and the speeding goes on day and night. Speed bumps are necessary in our community."
